Alitalia Airlines
Alitalia Airlines, the national flag carrier of Italy is based in Malpensa International Airport, Milan with a hub at Da Vinci International Airport, Rome. Headquartered in Rome, the airline operates services to 24 domestic and 66 international destinations.
Alitalia Airlines started operations on 5 May 1947 and took off its first maiden flight with a Fiat G-12 Alcione, piloted by Virginio Reinero from Turin to Catania and Rome. The first international flight of Alitalia left a year later, travelling between Milan and cities of South America. The airline merged with Linee Aeree Italiane and took on the name of Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane on 31 October 1957.
Owned by the Italian Ministry of the Treasury (49%), other shareholders, including employees (49%) and Air France-KLM (2%), Alitalia Airlines serves 22 airports in Italy, 34 airports in Europe, North Africa and Middle East and over 13 airport in the rest of the world. Since 2001, Alitalia Airlines has been the member of Sky Team Alliance whose members include some of the leading companies of Europe and the world like Aeroflot, Air France, Continental Airlines, KLM, Air Europa and Air Mexico. Alitalia is the world's 19th largest passenger airline by fleet size. The airline boasts of 173 aircrafts of which 145 for short/medium-haul and 28 for long haul. The aircrafts on intercontinental flights are B777-200s and B767-300s in the Extended Range version and MD11 Cargo. On domestic and international routes, the airline flies A321, A320, A319, MD80, ERJ-145, ERJ-170 and ATR-72 aircraft.
