Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located on the northern bank of the Periyar River in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district in Kerela. Also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, it is considered the paradise for bird watching. The evergreen forests of Thattekad are home to many to the migratory and domestic birds including Heron egret, Malabar Grey hornbill, Grey jungle fowl, Parakeet, Great Indian hornbill and several other rare species. Thattekad was developed as a bird sanctuary by the untiring efforts of the famous Indian ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali. He described Thattekad as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India comparable only with eastern Himalayas.
There are few hotels in Thattekad, which offer well furnished accommodation at affordable prices.
