Nestled on the left bank of the river Godavari, Rajahmundry is the fifth largest city of Andhra Pradesh. The city is believed to have been established by the Eastern Chalukya ruler Rajaraja Narendra in A.D. 1022. Therefore, it was called "Rajaraja Narendrapuram", Rajamahendravaram, Rajamandiram, and finally Rajahmundry. It is the birthplace of Nannayya, the poet laureate or 'Adi Kavi' (first poet) of Telugu and many other renowned artistes, writers and social reformers.
Known for its rich cultural past, Rajahmundry is one of the prime pilgrim centers for Hindus with its resplendent temples such as the Markandeya and Kotilingeswara temples on the bank of the Godavari. Pushkaram or bathing ritual that happens once in every two years draws thousands of devotees from all across the country who come here to take a holy dip in the Godavari river, which is believed to wash away their sins. Besides historical monuments and temples, the biggest attraction in Rajahmundry is the Asia’s largest rail-cum-road bridge, which links the city to Kovvur and is considered an engineering feat.
