Bounded by Salem district on the north, Attur Taluk on the east, Perambalur and Tiruchirappalli districts, on the south and Erode on the west, Namakkal town is the administrative headquarters of Namakkal district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It lies at the foothills of a hillock, which is dominated by an ancient fort. There are two rock–cut cave temples located on both sides of the hill dedicated to Narasimhaswamy and Ranganathasamy.
