Located on the banks of the river Yamuna is the holy city of Mathura, which is about 150km south of Delhi. It is reputed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, a Hindu deity. The famous Keshav Dev Temple was built on the site of Krishna's legendary birthplace (an underground prison). According to the great epic, Mahabharata, Mathura was the capital of the Surasena kingdom, ruled by Kamsa the maternal uncle of Krishna.
Mathura is dotted with numerous Hindu temples and shrines of which Krishnajanmabhoomi, Kans Kila, Vishram Ghat and Dwarikadheesh Temple are the prominent one. Apart form being a major Hindu pilgrimage center of India, Mathura is also known for its silver polishing, textile printing industry, and handmade crafts. The city boasts of one of the largest oil refineries of Asia owned by Indian Oil Corporation.
