Located on the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala is the famous Mudumalai National Park, which is known for its rich bio diversity and dense vegetation. The term 'Mudumalai' literally means 'Ancient Hill Range'. Spread over an area of 321 sq. km, it was the famous hunting ground for Britishers who stayed at Ooty. In 1940, Mudumalai was established as a wildlife sanctuary as an extension of Bandipur National Park. A part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Mudumalai Wildlife sanctuary holds the distinction of being the first sanctuary to be set up in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Situated at an elevation of 1000 meters, Mudumalai is blessed with thick wooded hills, plateaus, deep valleys, waterfalls, and rivers. It is home to elephants, spotted deer, gaur, tiger, leopard, chital, panther, python, sambar, wild boar & sloth bear and many rare resident and migratory birds. Otters and crocodiles inhabit the Moyar River. The ideal time to visit Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is from September to May.
