Located in Ponda, Shri Naguesh temple is one of the ancient temples in Goa. The origin of the temple can be traced back to the year 1413, when the region was under the rule of King Veer Pratap Devraya of the mighty Vijaynagar Empire. The temple underwent an extensive renovation process in the days of Chatrapati Shahu, the Maratha ruler of Satara. Dedicated to Lord Manguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, the temple has a magnificent tali or water reservoir surrounded by palm trees. It is built in such a way that standing at a certain point around the tank; one can view the reflection of the idol of Lord Naguesh and the lighted lamps in the inner sanctum. The Sabhamandap of Shri Naguesh temple has a gallery on both sides which contains exquisite wood carving depicting the events and incidents of the great Hindu epic Ramayana on one side and the wooden images of Astadikpal and Gandharva on the other.
