Located at a distance of 9 km from Panaji, Calangute is one of the busiest and commercialized beaches of Goa. This palm fringed sandy beach was discovered by the Hippies in the late 60’s. Calangute derives its name from the vernacular word –Koli gutti that literally means the land of fishermen. Some people also connect it with Kalyangutti, village of art and Konvallo-ghott (grove of coconut trees) as the area is full of coconut trees. With the advent of Portuguese, the word probably got distorted to Calangute which remains the same till today.
